Speaking at the ceremony, the Laos Party General Secretary and State President Choummaly Sayasone highlighted President Souphanouvong’s great contributions to the country’s struggle for independence as well national construction and defence.
He stressed that the whole nation was well aware of the important role that the revolutionary leader had played, after devoting all of his life to the Lao people’s revolutionary cause.
Similar ceremonies were also held in Luang Phrabang, where the late President was originally from, and Thakhek town in Khammouan province.
On July 12, the Vientiane authorities held a ceremony to rename a street Souphanouvong Avenue , 3.8km from Wattay International Airport to downtown Vientiane , in the presence of Prime Minister Buasone Bouphavanh.
A statue of President Souphanouvong was also erected in Luang Phrabang province on July 7./.
