Vientiane (VNA) – General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Choummaly Sayasone summed up the significant lessons Laos has learned during its 30 year renewal process while attending the LPRP’s 10th National Party Congress that opened in Vientiane on January 18.

First and foremost, Laos pursues the LPRP’s policy of inclusive and principal reform while continuing to uphold the creativity based on the firm target of socialist and national independence. The party has also applied Marxism – Leninism ideology and the thoughts of late President Kaysone Phomvihane, inheriting and promoting sound national traditions and human quintessence, he said.

Secondly, Laos regards national economic development towards a market economy, industrialisation, and modernisation as a crucial task, which must go with sustainable social development, poverty reduction, cultural preservation, environmental protection, and national defence and security, he added.

Thirdly, it is important to develop rural areas and promote national patriotic emulation movements, he said.

Fourthly, public support has become a fundamental factor for building the nation, stabilising politics, security and society as well as preserving national revolutionary achievements and territorial sovereignty, he highlighted.

Furthermore, it is necessary to enhance the leadership of the Party Committee to implement the Party’s policies and guidelines to suit different regions, he said, adding that promoting the strength of the political system at all levels is important.

Additionally, it is crucial to increase the role and leadership of the LPRP and its members to deal with negative phenomena and build a strong and transparent Party, the General Secretary noted.

Last but not least, Laos has learnt to be consistent in its external policy of peace, independence, friendship and cooperation as well as active international integration, expansion of relations with neighbours and other member countries in ASEAN, friends around the world, and international organisations.

The country pays special attention to promoting traditional ties and solidarity with countries that share socialist ideals along with strategic friends, he said, underlining this as an part of national construction and development.-VNA
