The Lao Government plans to upgrade Wattay International Airport in the capital of Vientiane later this year.
The plan, which will receive financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) includes expanding the airport to receive larger aircraft and schedule more flights to overseas destinations which will serve the foreign delegations that will attend the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) at the end of 2012.
JICA has completed a feasibility study of the plan. Accordingly, it will help Laos to increase its aircraft parking space, install X-ray security controls, provide three new firefighting vehicles and one modern rescue vehicle. The total cost of the plans add up to almost 12 million USD.
Once completed, the airport will be capable of receiving 20 aircraft a day, including 10 Boeing 747 aircrafts.
At present, the airport handles around 800,000 passengers every year./.
