Greece-flagged vessel Lissos carrying 1,015 Vietnamese labourers fromLibya anchored at the Cai Lan Port in the northern provinceof Quang Ninh on April 4.
These were the lastVietnamese workers to return home in the Vietnamese government’slargest-ever campaign to rescue 10,300 workers from chaotic Libya .
The Lissos cruise liner, which was hired by aBrazilian contractor to transport Vietnamese workers home, departed fromLibya ’s Benghazi Port on March 3 and was expected to dock at theHai Phong Port on March 21.
However, thevessel arrived in Vietnam two weeks later than scheduled because itstopped off at different ports along its route to take more fuels andfood for labourers.
Two businesses that sent workersto Libya, namely the Vinaconex Trade & Manpower Export Centre(Vinaconexmec) and the Viet Thang Company, arranged 30 buses totransport those workers to their homes, mainly in the central provincesof Nghe An and Ha Tinh.
Deputy Minister of Labour,War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thanh Hoa said the campaign tobring guest workers from Libya home was successfully completed thanks tothe Party and State’s sound and timely instruction as well asinternational organisations’ and individuals’ assistance.
After the campaign was launched on February 24, the government set up as teering committee on settlement of Vietnamese citizens in the MiddleEast and North Africa, sent five working teams to Libya ’sneighbouring countries and called for international support for theevacuation of Vietnamese workers./.
