Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Kheng told the media that a top-level meeting for leaders of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) is in preparation. However, he declined to give further details.
CNRP Chief Whip Son Chhay confirmed that both sides have been in contact to discuss topics for the meeting, expressing hope that it will come as soon as possible in order to find a solution to the seven-month-old political dispute.
The dispute between the two parties has simmered since the July election results showed that the CPP won 68 parliamentary seats against the CNRP’s 55.
Having boycotted parliament since last September, the CNRP is demanding either a probe into election irregularities or a re-election, along with deep electoral reform.
Hun Sen and Sam Rainsy met twice in September in a bid to resolve their political differences, but the talks failed to reach any agreement.
Sam Rainsy said his party will hold anti-government protests on May 1, ahead of the council election campaign for the second term from May 2-16.-VNA
