Libya has appointed Salahedin Mohamed El Bishari as its ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), making it the first African country to post an ambassador to the organisation.

Before the appointment, Bishari worked as the Secretary of the Libyan Embassy in Indonesia.

ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan welcomed Libya ’s move and confirmed that ASEAN is eager to develop its ties with countries and regions around the world.

Through this appointment, ASEAN can now seek ways of expanding its ties with Libya and establish a closer relationship with the African Union (AU), which includes Libya , he said.

Ambassador Bishari stated that his country wants to step up its relationship with ASEAN and it will do all it can to enhance long-term ties between the AU and ASEAN.

As many as 14 countries and the European Union have so far appointed ambassadors to ASEAN./.
