The people of the Mekong Delta province of Can Tho are urged to join hands with authorities in responding to climate change, after recent surveys found that residents did not take the issue seriously.

The matter was put forth at a working session between representatives of the UK-based Challenge to Change (CtC) organisation, the US Rockefeller Foundation, and authorities of the Mekong delta City of Can Tho in Can Tho city on August 6.

The working session dealt with the impact of climate change on Can Tho’s Vinh Thanh and Binh Thuy districts, which are forecast to be the most vulnerable, and the capacity of these districts to respond to the problem.

The session was held within the framework of the “Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network” project– an initiative jointly carried out by the CtC and the Rockefeller Foundation in Vietnam , Thailand , India and Indonesia , to enable local governments and civic partners to share lessons learned in each city which help them develop appropriate responses to climate change.

The CtC and the Rockefeller Foundation have chosen Can Tho to implement their initiative, as experts have predicted that almost all the land in the city will be submerged under water in the next 20 years.

Since 2004, waters of the Mekong river coming downstream have caused the water level of the Hau river, which runs through Can Tho, to rise by 4 cm on average annually. The Hau river may swell by 40-50 cm in the next ten years before submerging the city.

Under the initiative, courses are expected to be held in Can Tho’s Vinh Thanh and Binh Thuy districts aiming to raise local people’s awareness of climate change and environmental protection.

Two water supply stations, a solar-generated power facility, and ecological latrines will be built in the districts. Equipment and facilities necessary for dealing with floods will also be provided to the local communities there.

After their fact-finding tour of the two localities and at Can Tho’s request, the CtC and the Rockefeller Foundation said they would grant Can Tho 50,000 USD to implement these projects./.
