The southern province of Long An has so far this year reaped over 2.8 million tonnes of paddy rice, up by 150,000 tonnes from last year’s figure, a record hike due to the province’s usage of quality and high-yield rice varieties.

The bumper crop results from that Long An has planned zones growing high-quality rice varieties and large-scale areas covering 9,000 hectares in Tan Hung, Vinh Hung, Moc Hoa, Tan Thanh and Thanh Hoa districts while expanding areas for three-crop rice cultivation to nearly 23,000 ha.

The province’s agricultural sector also encouraged local farmers to cultivate high-yield and quality rice seeds to increase rice production for export.

In addition, the sector has invested more than 80 billion VND (3.76 million USD) in combination with contributions made by local people to upgrade over 100 irrigation works to ensure sufficient agricultural water supply and the building of dykes to protect rice fields as well.

The province has directed Long An Food Company, rice export and processing enterprises and around 5,000 rice-husking businesses to purchase and process rice for export, which helps local farmers gain profits ranging from 25-35 million VND (1,250-1,750 USD) per hectare.-VNA
