Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s cabinet on June 15 approved in principle a proposal that all foreigners residing in the country under the Non-Immigrant Visa (NIV) have to purchase COVID-19 insurance with the minimum coverage of 100,000 USD.

Deputy government spokesperson Traisuree Taisaranakul said the rule would be applicable for all holders of the one-year NIV, which is granted in four categories: marriage, work, business and retirement.

At present, foreigners holding the NIV must have insurance with minimum coverage of 40,000 baht (1,300 USD) for outpatient treatment and 400,000 baht (12,800 USD) for inpatient treatment.

Thai media on June 16 quoted the deputy government spokesperson as saying that after the in-principle approval, the next step would be for the Immigration Bureau to publish full details and make it official.

On June 16, Thailand recorded another 2,331 cases of COVID-19 and 40 deaths, raising the national tally to 204,595 and fatalities to 1,525./.
