A power transmission cable line will be established later this month in a bid to power Ly Son island district in the central province of Quang Ngai.
Designed and installed by the Italian company Prysmian and Vietnam’s Thai Duong company, the 652.5 billion VND (31.1 million USD) project comprises a 8.7km-long middle-voltage transmission line in Binh Son district and a 26.2km-long network of 22kV undersea cables.
Once connected to the national power grid, the line will benefit Ly Son’s 21,000 residents. The island district is significant in terms of national security and marine industry.
According to Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), the island districts of Van Don and Co To in Quang Ninh, Cat Hai in Hai Phong, Phu Quy in Binh Thuan, Con Dao in Ba Ria–Vung Tau, and Phu Quoc in Kien Giang have access to electricity.
Kien Hai island district in the southern province of Kien Giang will be connected to the national grid later this year.
EVN is considering wind and solar power for the remaining four island districts that lie over 100km off the mainland.
Huynh Kim Tuoc, Director of Ho Chi Minh City’s Energy Saving Centre, suggested the State offer remote districts subsidies for the development of alternative energy sources in case they cannot be connected to the national grid./.
