A major border marker between the central province of Quang Tri and Laos ’ Salavan province was inaugurated on May 16.

The freshly built border marker No. 635 at the La Lay-La Lay international border gate is the only major border marker to be planted between the two provinces.

Construction has been put under the tight supervision of a joint legal and technical team to ensure the location was precisely based on the border demarcation. It is aimed at servicing long-term border management and cross-border transport between the two countries, said the Quang Tri Border Marker Planting Steering Board.

Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister and Chairman of the National Border Committee, Ho Xuan Son, said the work will help bring opportunities in tourism and trade for the La Lay-La Lay border gate and the entire border area as a whole.

Nguyen Quan Chinh, Vice Chairman of the Quang Tri People’s Committee and Head of the provincial Border Marker Planting Steering Board, pledged to join with the neighbouring Lao province to complete the planting of border markers by the end of 2012./.
