The Global Fund Malaria Control Project is paying off after four years to be put into action in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai, cutting the number of locals to contract the parasitic disease by 71.9 percent.

Nearly 800,000 people living in 12 districts in the province have become the beneficiaries in the initial phase of the project which is aimed at reducing malaria.

The project has provided them with anti-mosquito nets and cleared the targeted areas with anti-mosquito chemicals. It has also given training to local medical workers.

In the phase lasting from 2009 to 2013, the beneficiaries of the project will be expanded to those who work and spend the night in the forest and farms.

The project will allocate around 3.6 billion VND to buy hammocks and mosquito nets for them and provide masks for rubber workers./.
