Malaysia Airlines has launched a Southeast Asian regional travel pass, offering discounted trips to attract more passengers.

The "ASEAN Pass" will allow travellers to take four flights between the 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at a price of 229 USD, the national flag carrier said.

Malaysia Airlines plunged into the red in the first quarter, with losses of 198 million USD due to weaker demand, overcapacity and volatile fuel prices. It was the first quarterly loss for the company in two-and-a-half years.

The outlook remains challenging as travel demand in the second quarter was expected to remain soft, according to the airlines.

According to Malaysia Airlines Chairman Munir Majid, the initiative was in line with the tourism industry’s efforts to promote intra-ASEAN travel.

Tourist arrivals into Malaysia from regional countries reached 16.6 million last year, an increase of 15.6 percent over 2007./.
