More than 30,000 people rallied in Kuala Lumpur on August 1, demanding an end to a new internal security law that allows indefinite detention without trial.

Among demonstrators were opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and other high-ranking figures.

Protesters began massing at the National Mosque, the Sogo Trade Centre and then marched through major streets in the capital city in defiance of government warnings that police would crack down on demonstrators, who are pushing authorities to scrap the Internal Security Act (ISA).

About 5,000 police were mobilised and roadblocks were set up across Kuala Lumpur to prevent the demonstrators from reaching the city center.

Police fired water canons and tear gas to disperse the crowds when they came close to the National Palace .

According to Kuala Lumpur Police Deputy Chief Ismail Omar, nearly 200 people were arrested, including Anwar Ibrahim’s right hand./.
