Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia’s opposition Pakatan Harapan, or Pact of Hope (PH), coalition will announce its candidate for the post of Prime Minister this weekend.

The PH annual convention on January 7 is set to decide who will run for the Prime Minister post in the country’s general election this year, said PH chairman Mahathir Mohamad after the PH presidential council meeting on January 4.

The PH coalition was formed in 2015, consisting of the Democratic Action Party (DPA), People’s Justice Party (PKR), National Trust Party (PAN) and Malaysian United Indigenous Party (PPBM).

It is a broad alliance of centre-left parties for the general election due to be held by August 2018.

During a PH retreat in December last year, leaders of PPBM, DAP and PAN agreed to select PPBM President Mahathir to be the PM candidate, and Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, PKR President and wife of former Deputy PM Ibrihim Anwar, to run for the deputy PM seat.

However, the decision was opposed by several PRK leaders.-VN
