Malaysia, Thailand step up border security cooperation
Thailand’s media on September 19 said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha suggested Malaysia cooperate in restoring peace and order in Thailand’s southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat.
Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha (Photo: EPA/VNA)Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s media on September 19 said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha suggested Malaysia cooperate in restoring peace and order in Thailand’s southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat.
At a meeting with Malaysia’s senior officials last week, including Finance Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Johari bin Abdul Ghani, PM Prayut stressed that security in the southernmost provinces is important to national security and development of Thailand.
On September 14, at the 106th meeting of the Committee for Thailand-Malaysia border area in Penang, Malaysia, the two sides agreed to boost joint patrols to enhance the efficiency of handling the two countries’ national security issues.
The Malaysian side agreed with the Thai side on dispatching border policemen and military officers to patrol the shared border. Both hoped that the activity will help deter drug trafficking, smuggling and cross-border crimes.-VNA
