Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia will form a national committee to monitor and facilitate the overall implementation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, Minister of International Trade and Industry Mustapa Mohamed said on March 15.

The committee will comprise representatives of ministries and government agencies involved in the trade agreement. An independent consultative committee will also be established to gather feedback and assess the impact of TPP implementation, from time to time.

The consultative committee will be made up of representatives from industrial sectors, commercial chambers, small and medium enterprises, non-governmental organisations and various other local stakeholders.

Mustapa said the Government remains committed to ensuring that Malaysia will be able to take full advantage of the opportunities and mitigate the challenges that the TPP will bring.

The minister expressed his hope that the formation of the committees will help Malaysia achieve such targets.

He said the country will need to amend some laws concerning three main areas: the rules of origin, intellectual property rights and labour, in order to ensure the country is in a position to meet the obligations stipulated under the TPP.

Malaysia and the other 11 member countries including the US, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Mexico,New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam signed the TPP on February 4, 2016 in Auckland, New Zealand.
