Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - The Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) (the Islamic Party of Malaysia) has decided not to support the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in the Semenyih by-election, Selangor state, said Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on February 16.

The Malaysian leader revealed this information when answering questions related to his meeting with PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang on February 15, where they talked about politics and signed an agreement.

With Mahathir’s disclosure, the Pakatan Harapan, or Pact of Hope (PH), where Mahathir is President, is likely to dominate in the upcoming additional election in Semenyih town.

The by-election was called following the death of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s Bakhtiar Mohd Nor, who won the seat by near 9,000 votes in May last year. He died of a heart attack on January 11.

According to the Election Commission of Malaysia, an early voting will take place on February 26, while the official ballot is set on March 2. This is the sixth by-election in Malaysia since the 14th general election (GE14) in May 2018.

The previous by-elections, especially the voting in the Cameron Highlands on January 26, the National Front (BN) led by UMNO, always received the support from PAS. -VNA
