Malaysia’s anti-graft agency has requested former Prime Minister Najib Razak, who has been involved in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, to appear at its office on August 7.

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia’s anti-graft agency has requestedformer Prime Minister Najib Razak, who has been involved in the 1MalaysiaDevelopment Berhad (1MDB) scandal, to appear at its office on August 7.

Najib was asked to appear at theMalaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s office at 5pm (local time), according toThe Daily Star.

Both MACC and Najib’s spokesmandid not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Najib was arrested on July 3 forcorruption-related charges over his involvement in the multi-billion-dollar1MBD scandal. He was later released on bail.

He was charged with three countsof criminal breach of trust in his former posts as a prime minister and ministerof finance, in association with the transfer of 42 million ringgit, or 10million USD, from SRC InternationalSdn Bhd to his personal bank accounts between August 2011 and March 2015. Healso faced one count of corruption.

Each count carries a fine and asentence of up to 20 years in prison. However, Najib pleaded not guilty to allcharges at the court.

Najib founded the 1MDB investmentfund in 2009, supposedly to serve Malaysia’s development through globalpartnerships and foreign direct investment.

However, it became the centre ofa money laundering scandal, allegedly causing losses of up to 3.7 billion USDand leading to probes into the financial markets in several countries such asthe US, Switzerland, Singapore, Malaysia and China.

From the raids on several ofNajib’s properties in Kuala Lumpur, police seized valuables worth up to 273million USD. His trial is scheduled to begin in February next year.-VNA
