Kuala Lumpur (VNA) –
Malaysia’s King Muhammad V has abdicated the throne, palace officials has confirmed.

The resignation took effect from January 6, according to the palace.

Muhammad V was crowned and became the 15th monarch on April 24, 2017.        

The palace confirmed the resignation with immediate effect of the 49-year-old, who had been on the throne for two years. 

Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy, with a unique arrangement where the throne changes hands every five years between rulers of the nine Malaysian
