Professor Ngo Bao Chau has accepted the role as the director of the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics.

His decision came after Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung gave the green light to foundation of the institute last week.

The Prime Minister's ratification followed months of discussion between Professor Chau and other leading mathematicians and the Government and the Ministry of Education and Training.

Chau and other mathematicians put forward the idea of the institute, modelled on similar bodies in other maths powerhouse countries, after he received the Fields Medal, considered maths' highest honour, last August.

Speaking to the English-language daily lVietnam News from Chicago , Chau said: "The important thing now is to deliver good performance."

He said he will return to Vietnam next March to help establish the institute./.
