Medvedev ratifies new Russia-US nuclear treaty

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on January 28 signed the ratification of a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (new START) with the United States.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on January 28 signed the ratification of a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (new START) with the United States.

Medvedev said at a Security Council of the Russian Federation meeting that the signing of the treaty was a very significant event for Russia, the US and the entire world.

The treaty will formally take effect after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton exchange documents of ratification documents in Germany ’s Munich city in early February, he stated.

The new START sets lower warhead ceiling and limits each side to 700 deployed long-range missiles and heavy bombers.

Medvedev and his US counterpart, Barack Obama, signed the new START in Prague on April 8, 2010 as the two sides tried to “reset” relations that soured under the eight-year Republican administration of George W. Bush./.
