Meetings were held in the central city of Da Nang and the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on May 12 to object China’s illegal placement of an oil rig in Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zone.
Organised by the Union of Friendship Organisations, the Historical Science Association (HAS) and the Fishery Association in Da Nang, the event brought together about 500 participants
Speaking at the event, HAS Chairman Bui Van Tieng vehemently opposed China’s violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty as it has placed the rig and a large number of vessels, including military ships, illegally in Vietnam’s waters.
Tieng said China’s action is illegal. He also called on Chinese friendship organisations, especially the China-Vietnam Friendship Association, Chinese historians and fishermen to request the Chinese government unconditionally remove its rig and ships out of Vietnam’s waters.
On behalf of local fishermen, Le Van Le, the owner of a fishing boat, denounced China’s deed, saying that Da Nang fishermen are determined to maintain their activities in Hoang Sa fishing grounds to contribute to protecting Vietnam’s sea and island sovereignty.
On the occasion, the organisers issued a joint statement, which specified that China’s acts seriously violate Vietnam’s sovereignty and jurisdiction as regulated by the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and related agreements on basic principles for settlement of sea-related issues signed between the two countries’ leaders.
The statement stressed that these acts directly heighten tensions in the region, negatively affect regional peace and stability, and threaten security and safety, free navigation and trade in the East Sea.
Participants said China’s illegal deeds not only have effects on the friendship between the two nations but also the long-lasting ties between their people.
In Can Tho, more than 2,000 people representing all walks of life gathered for the meeting, during which they expressed their belief and strong support for the Party and State’s policy to protect the country’s sovereignty and settle disputes in the East Sea peacefully.-VNA
