The Industry and Trade Ministry's Vietnam Competition Administration Department on Wednesday began a preliminary investigation about Megastar Cineplex's alleged abuse of market position in imported film distribution.
Megastar has been taken to court by six Vietnamese film companies, including Sai Gon Movie Joint-Stock Company, Dong Nai Film Distribution and Screening Company, Sai Gon Movies Media Joint-Stock Company (Saigon Media), Thien Ngan (Galaxy) Studios, Media 212 Joint-Stock Company (Cinebox) and Ha Noi Movie One-Member Limited Company, according to an unofficial source who declined to be named.
The companies' complaint dossier said the foreign-invested company Megastar dominated the film market's imported film distribution.
The complaint said that Megastar had abused its position, adversely affecting local cinema owners, by charging unreasonable customs and service prices.
Megastar requires cinemas to pay a so-called minimum-per-capita fee, and as a result, customer ticket prices are too high because of the fees, according to the complaint./.
