Mekong delta poor benefit from ministry’s medical help

Tens of thousands of poor people in An Giang province have access to reasonably-priced health services thanks to a medical support project in the Mekong delta.
Tens of thousands of poor people in An Giang province have access toreasonably-priced health services thanks to a medical support project inthe Mekong delta.

Within the project, which is conducted bythe Health Ministry, 59,505 people living under or just at the povertyline have received free health insurance and access to healthcareconsultancy services. Heart surgeries have been carried out for manychildren under six year of age and the elderly.

The project hasalso supported the management and treatment for psychopaths in the eightcommunes of An Phu, Tinh Bien, Tri Ton and Thoai Son districts.

Aspart of the project, 115 medical workers have been supported toundertake unversity education and specialised training courses. Inaddition, the provincial polyclinic and the An Giang preventive medicalcentre have been provided with modern equipment to improve theirdiagnosis and treatment capacity.

Apart from An Giang, the project has also provided assistance to the other 12 cities and provinces in the Mekong delta.

Kickedoff in September 2006 and expected to complete by the end of 2011, theproject has a total investment of 85 million USD, taken from theofficial development assistance (ODA) commitment to Vietnam .

Thefunding allocated to An Giang is more than 6.4 million USD, of whichthe majority or over 4.96 million USD, has been disbursed in 2010./.

Director of the municipal Department of Health Tran Thanh Thuy said the city has developed a comprehensive plan for conducting free periodic health examinations and screening services throughout 2026, and prepared the necessary human resources, facilities and digital infrastructure to ensure effective implementation.

Health experts warned that prolonged heat exposure could cause heatstroke, heat exhaustion and other serious health conditions. Medical facilities were instructed to strengthen surveillance, especially for individuals who have travelled to or returned from outbreak-hit countries or areas within the previous 21 days.
