Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh has asked the Mekong Delta to strengthen regional links to fully tap its potential and strengths at a conference in Can Tho city on July 17.

He said the Mekong Delta boasts advantages in rice production and seafood exploitation. However, limitations in applying technological advances in production and lack of regional linkage plans hinder the development of the region.

The regional linkage will help the Mekong Delta effectively use its existing resources, thus making it a united bloc that has links with Ho Chi Minh City, Southeast, Central Highlands and other regions nationwide, the Deputy PM noted.

He said the connection between Mekong Delta localities also aims to turn the region into a key agricultural, industrial and service hub which makes significant contributions to the national economy.

It will focus on infrastructure construction investment planning and linkages in rice, fruit and seafood production, processing and consumption, training human resources and developing educational and health facilities.

The region will boost cooperation in protecting resources and the environment and dealing with natural disasters and climate change.-VNA
