WWF has warned that the 163 new species discovered over last year in the Greater Mekong region could face extinction due to climate change.

The organisation report said the findings include 100 plants, 28 fish, 18 reptiles, 14 amphibians, two mammals and a bird which prove the region’s richness.

It, however, warned that rising seas would cost the habitats of such rare, endangered and endemic species like the leopard gecko, which lives only in the lowland area of the region.

The lowland area of the Mekong river region, covering Laos , Cambodia , Myanmar , Thailand , China and Vietnam , would suffer from abnormal prolong heat waves and short cold spells in the next decade, said the organisation.

At present, storms and floods are adversely affecting biodiversity, food security and the life of flora and fauna in the Mekong delta of Vietnam and Tonle Sap of Cambodia./.
