Delegates to the Mekong River Commission (MRC) senior officials meeting in ChaAm – Hua Hin, central Thailand, have called upon nations along Mekong River to boost cooperation in sharing information to develop the river’s natural resources.

At their discussions on April 3-4, participants stressed lack of full cooperation in developing Mekong River ’s natural resources and called on nations along the river to seek measures to both tap the river’s economic benefits and prevent negative impacts on society and the environment.

Thai Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suwit Khunkitti said China ’s provision of hydrological data to the MRC would contribute to improve cooperation between countries along the Mekong River and China .

China will closely work with those Mekong countries to solve current drought, Chen Mingzhou, Deputy Head of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology’s International Cooperation Department.

Solutions raised at the summit will be submitted to the MRC Summit scheduled for April 4-5 in ChaAm – Hua Hin with participation of the leaders of Cambodia , Laos , Thailand and Vietnam and representatives from China as observer.

Earlier on April 3, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva chaired a special meeting to discuss security measures for the MRC Summit. The Thai government on March 31 decided to impose the internal security act at the the place where the summit will take place and deploy more than 8,000 policemen and military soldiers for security./.
