A memorial dedicated to 180 Hanoi-born soldiers, who laid down their lives in the northern battlefields of the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum, has been built in Ya Xier commune of the province’s Sa Thay district.

A ceremony to hand over the memorial was held by the Kon Tum provincial People’s Committee, the Hanoi municipal People’s Committee and the Hanoi Capital High Command on July 19.

Work on the memorial, located in the 995-Chu Tan Kra historical relic site, began in 2011 at a total cost of over 33 billion VND (1.57 million USD).

Between March and July 1968, nearly 400 soldiers, mostly from the capital city, died in Kon Tum’s northern battlefields.

The memorial is expected to help educate young generations about the great sacrifice of soldiers for national independence.

On the occasion, Kon Tum province announced a decision to recognise the 995-Chu Tan Kra complex as a provincial historical relic site.-VNA
