Hanoi (VNA) - Meticulous preparations are underway for the upcoming election of deputies to the 15th National Assembly (NA) and people’s councils at all levels in the 2021-2026 tenure, which are slated for May 23.

 

As an important political event, the elections offer an opportunity for people to exercise their right to mastery and vote for virtuous and talented deputies who represent the people’s will and aspirations to the National Assembly and all-level people’s councils, thus contributing to building, consolidating and completing the rules-based socialist State of the Communist Party of Vietnam, according to Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong.

Lessons from the nation’s first election on January 6, 1946 are still valuable, highlighting the direct responsibilities of the election councils and voters across the nation to select virtuous and talented candidates running for seats in the National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels in a democratic fashion for the destiny of the nation and people.

Life changes from voters’ ballots

Tran Thi Anh, a representative from Residential Area No.4, Vinh Tuy ward, Hoang Mai district, has made up a list of the area’s voters for a week.

She said the ward People’s Committee ordered residential areas to mobilise locals to cast their ballots on the election slated for May 23, as well as inform them of the election plans.

“Along with the public media, residentials areas have stepped up popularisation to raise public awareness of the significance of the election day as well as each ballot”, she said.

Joining the preparation work through various elections, Anh said that this election has dramatic differences as compared to the previous ones, adding it takes place in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and drastic change in the political-socio-economic situations in the country and the whole world.

“To this end, choosing the best deputies who meet the expectations of the people is very important to the nation’s destiny”, according to Anh.

Just like in Hanoi, locals in Viet Yen district, the northern province of Bac Giang are eager for this important political event.

According to Nguyen Dai Luong, Vice Chairman of Viet Yen district People’s Committee, competent bureaus of Viet Yen district are rushing off their feet to prepare for the election of deputies to the 15th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels, with everything meticulously planned, from making the list of the nominees, arranging polling stations, logistics work to security work.

Special attention has been paid to the communication work to ensure local residents fully understand their roles and responsibilities for choosing the standout delegates on election day.

Meanwhile, Duong Minh Bui, deputy head of Viet Yen district’s Party Committee’s commission for education and popularisation, said the 14th National Assembly and the People’s Councils at all levels successfully completed their missions as the representative organ of the voters.

Bui expressed his delight at the country’s excellent socio-economic achievements in the past tenure, helping improve local livelihoods.

“Many localities have been given a facelift thanks, a vivid illustration for the voter’s right decision to choose their representatives who were able to speak up for their voice”, Bui added.

As a voter in Viet Yen district, Bui expected deputies to the 15th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels will take on responsibility, and capitalise on their own ability and strengths to serve the nation.

Voters nationwide will choose 500 out of 868 candidates for the 15th National Assembly on May 23.

In accordance with the Law on the Election of Deputies to the National Assembly and People’s Councils, the National Election Council (NEC) announced the official list of candidates during a press conference on April 27.

Throughout a five-step process with three rounds of close, democratic, cautious, and non-discriminatory consultations, the list of candidates for deputies to the 15th NA and all-level People’s Councils for the 2021-2026 tenure has been finalised.

Following the second consultation held by the Presidium of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee, the NA Standing Committee on March 28 issued a resolution on a second revision of the structure, components, and number of nominees for seats in the 15th legislature.

Of the candidates, who will be elected in 184 constituencies nationwide, 203 are nominated by central agencies and the remainders are introduced by localities. Nine of them are self-nominated candidates.

Female candidates account for 393 (45.28 percent) of the total, while ethnic minority people are 185 (12.31 percent). The number of candidates who are non-Party members is 74 (8.53 percent)./.
