The nuclear power development programme from now until 2020 will need more than 1,000 highly trained staff, therefore more attention needs to be paid to developing the sector’s labour force, said Dr. Vuong Huu Tan, Director of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute.

In an interview with the Vietnam News Agency, Dr. Tan added that the construction of the nuclear power station will also require between 6,000-10,000 workers.

According to the human resources training programme for nuclear power stations, the Atomic Energy Institute will be in charge of setting up a training centre that specialises in nuclear related work.

At the same time, universities need to improve their staff’s knowledge on nuclear issues by sending them abroad for more indepth training, Dr. Tan suggested.

Another measure is to invite experts from countries with advanced nuclear power industries to train younger staff on the technologies used in nuclear power and in safety techniques.

Vietnam should also make full use of existing cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The 800 people currently working in nuclear power sector, should also enjoy good salaries and working conditions, said Dr. Tan./.
