The Ministry of Construction has asked the Government to allocate 1.5 trillion VND (83.3 million USD) from the central budget in 2010 to help build houses for 180,000 poor households across the country.

The funding aims to continue the Government’s programme on housing development for poor households in rural areas, which has received support from organisations, economic sectors and localities.

The programme has been being carried out in 59 of 61 cities and provinces nationwide. In 59 localities, over 497,000 households were listed as needing assistance, amounting to 7.9 trillion VND (438.8 million USD).

In 2009, the programme saw positive results in the southern provinces of Tra Vinh, Soc Trang and Tien Giang, the northern provinces of Lao Cai and Ha Giang and the central province of Thanh Hoa . It helped poor households in 62 poor districts, especially the Khmer ethnic people in the south-western region.

However, the central provinces of Quang Tri and Quang Ngai, and southern province of Ben Tre have seen slow progress./.
