The number of children being treated for respiratory diseases in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City hospitals has increased, doctors said.

At Bach Mai Hospital, associate professor Nguyen Tien Dung, Head of the Paediatrics Ward, said numbers of children affected had increased by 30 percent in one month.

He said he believed the weather was so hot and changeable that resistance in children had decreased.

At the National Paediatrics Hospital, Tran Thu Trang, said that more than 3,000 children were treated for respiratory diseases in July, an increase of 1,000 in a month.

The children had high temperatures, were sneezing, had runny noses and sore throats. Most were between two and four years old.

Trang said that parents should not let their children come in contact with adults with symptoms of flu and respiratory diseases.

He also warned against taking children to crowded places where the air was heavy with exhaust fumes and cigarette smoke.

In HCM City, Nguyen Thanh Hung, Director of Paediatrics Hospital No 1, told the Tien phong (Vanguard) newspaper that the situation there was similar.

About 300-400 children had health checks each day compared to 200-250 children in previous months.

In Paediatrics Hospital No 2, more than 62,300 children had health checks for respiratory diseases at the hospital in May, but in the first two weeks of July, more than 34,000 were treated.-VNA
