Ninh Thuan (VNA) - The People’s Committee of the central province of Ninh Thuan on June 11 started to distribute more than 3,847 tonnes of rice as aid from the Government to local people who have suffered from losses by prolonged drought.

According to Dang Thi Phan, Vice Director of the provincial Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, as many as 129,159 residents in six districts are expected to benefit from this second rice distribution.

Each person will receive 15 kilogrammes of rice per month within two months, she said, adding that the rice has been transported to the localities for distribution.

More than 1,338 tonnes of rice were delivered to the most drought-stricken district of Thuan Nam for prompt distribution to 44,618 people.

Lasting drought in Ninh Thuan province has left 129,159 people in need of food aid and 6,045 others thirsty for fresh water. It also has critical impacts on local production, damaging 154 hectares of crops, halting cultivation on over 9,600 hectares of land and killing more than 3,200 head of cattle.-VNA
