Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai called for further support from the international community in coping with climate change in Vietnam, especially in the Mekong Delta region, during the Mekong Delta Forum 2015 that opened in Ho Chi Minh City on February 2.
Over the past years, Vietnam has joined international efforts in dealing with climate change by integrating responding measures into its socio-economic development plans, he said.
He highlighted the Vietnamese Government’s special attention to the Mekong Delta region, since its strategic role in ensuring national food security and developing the southern region is being challenged by water resource issues, salinity, and other negative impacts of climate change, which are also big problems to the country’s socio-economic growth.
The Deputy PM suggested that participating delegates seek synchronous, trans-regional, stable and long-term measures to ultimately tackle climate change effects to ensure the prosperity of the region.
According to World Bank Country Director to Vietnam Victoria Kwakwa, Vietnam should take actions immediately to avoid costly remedies in the future.
The WB and other development partners could help Vietnam access professional expertise and technical and financial assistance when implementing measures to mitigate climate change impacts in the Mekong Delta region, she pledged.
Jointly held by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the WB and other development partners, the forum focuses on long-term response visions and development scenarios for the Mekong Delta region.
During the two-day event, participants also discuss experience in climate change response in other delta regions in the world, as well as ways to boost sustainable livelihood through adaptation management built on the Mekong Delta Plan for the 2016-20 period.-VNA
