Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – The central coastal province of Thua Thien-Hue will spend more than 300 billion VND (million USD) to build a sea dyke along the coast from Thuan An to Tu Hien which is threatened by serious erosion.

The 3-km dyke will protect 1,316 households with 5,753 persons in five coastal communes along with more than 450 ha of rice farming land, 85 ha of aquaculture land and 14 ha of protective forest.

The dyke will be part of a larger system to prevent sea encroachment running from Phong Dien district to Phu Loc district.

The construction of the dyke will be carried out during three years from November 2018.

According to the province’s steering committee for natural disaster prevention and control and search and rescue, there are 12 sites of serious erosion along the coastline from Phong Dien to Phu Loc with a total length of 30 km, posing danger to the daily life and farming of more than 2,300 households.

In many coastal areas of Thua Thien-Hue, local residents have been planting trees to fight erosion, but the effect does not meet expectation. Meanwhile, the building of dykes piloted in some areas proves to be more suitable.-VNA
