A court in Busan, in the Republic of Korea , has handed out a 12-year jail sentence to a RoK man who stabbed his new Vietnamese bride to death, a case that has led to curbs on international matchmaking agencies.
The sentence was less than the initially-demanded life sentence for the 47-year-old man, identified only as Jang, who was diagnosed with mental health issues.
According to the court, Jang would have to continue treatment in prison and wear an electronic tag for the next ten years.
Jang killed the 20-year-old girl, Thach Thi Hoang Ngoc, only eight days after she arrived in the country to live with him.
After the killing, the government issued regulations to tighten the controls on international matchmaking businesses.
Almost 30 million VND (25,000 dollars) was collected by RoK organisations and agencies for the girl’s family.
