Myanmar's Union Parliament on July 25 adopted a proposal to form a Constitution Review Joint Committee to make necessary amendments to the 2008 Constitution.

The 109-member committee was established with the Deputy Speaker of the Union Parliament as chairman, and either Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (Lower House) or Deputy Speaker of the House of Nationalities (Upper House) reserved for vice chairman.

The committee members proportionally represent parliament members of both Houses, political parties, military MPs and individuals.

The parliament's adoption is viewed as a solution to controversial constitutional issues ahead of the country’s 2015 general election.

In March this year, Myanmar's Lower House agreed to the proposal submitted by Thura U Aye Myint, vice chairman of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).-VNA
