Hanoi (VNA) - A court in Myanmar has sentenced deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison for incitement against the military and violating anti-COVID-19 regulations, a spokesperson of the military administration said on December 6.

Spokesman Zaw Min Tun said former president Win Myint was also jailed for four years on the same charges.

Myanmar has been in a political deadlock since February 1, when the military detained government leaders, regional and state governors, and senior members of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party over the charge of electoral fraud.

After seizing power, the military junta declared a one-year state of emergency and pledged to hold elections and hand over power.

On July 26, it cancelled the results of the 2020 elections won by the NLD of Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) called on the relevant parties in Myanmar to pursue dialogue, reconciliation, and work for the return to normalcy./.
