Hanoi (VNA) – At least seven was killed and 32 others were injured when demonstrators clashed with police in Myanmar’s Rakhine state on January 16 night, China’s Xinhua news agency cited a release of Myanmar's Information Ministry as saying on January 17.

According to Xinhua, more than 1,000 people gathered around the local administration office building in Mrauk U at about 7 pm local time to protest a ban of an event to mark the 233rd anniversary of the fall of ethnic Arakan Kingdom.

Clashes occurred and worsened, forcing the police to fire warning shots to disperse the crowd, resulting in the fatalities.  

About 20 police force members were also injured, while the administration office building was damaged.

Local authorities are taking measures to restore peace and stability in the area.-VNA
