Hanoi (VNA) – The authorities of Yangon city of Myanmar are planning to expand the city in the southwest direction with new seven satellite towns, reported local newspaper “Myawaddy” on November 7.

The Greater Yangon Strategic Development Plan 2040 will be carried out with the help of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Yangon’s Mayor U Maung Maung Soe said the satellite towns in the project are Yangon Eastern, Yangon West, Thanlyin, Dala, Htantabin, Hmawby and Helgu.

Satellite towns will house residential areas, factories and workshops to solve the population growth.

The project is planned with the involvement of local people, legal experts, public administrators and international experts.

Yangon is currently facing overflowing water because people’s litter jammed its drainage system. Meanwhile, some buildings do not meet the criteria of a modern city.
