The Myanmar Union Election Commission (MUEC) is allowing political parties to run their election campaigns on the state-owned Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV) from September 8 to November 6.

A 15-minute speech for campaign purpose will be permitted on the radio and TV, the MUEC announced on August 27, adding that permission applications should be submitted seven days in advance.

According to the preliminary candidate list compiled by the commission, some 6,189 candidates have registered to run for the election thus far, including 323 independent candidates and 5,866 others nominated from 93 political parties.

The commission has designated 1,171 constituencies for the vote across the country, 330 of which will contest for seats in the Lower House, 168 for the Upper House, 644 for the Region or State Parliament and 29 for national race representatives.

Myanmar will hold its general election on November 8 this year to select a new government for the next five-year term starting in 2016 when the current government term ends.-VNA
