Myanmar President U Thein Sein on January 2 expressed his belief that a healthy constitution must be amended from time to time to address national economic and social needs.
He made the remark in his regular monthly address to the nation aired on the state radio.
The president said political dialogues, which are essential for national reconciliation and the foundation of the national peace process, may require the amending or revision of the Constitution.
Thein Sein went on to say that constitutional amendments and other related issues are now openly discussed and debated among the public.
The National League for Democracy (NLD), a prominent political group led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and other political parties have also actively organised forums and meetings to discuss constitutional amendments, he said.
On December 31, the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party proposed amending 73 provisions and annulling 21 provisions of the 2008 Constitution ahead of the 2015 general election.
The decision includes a proposed amendment to Section 59-f of the 2008 Constitution, which blocks opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from becoming president.
Earlier, the opposition, the NLD, announced that it will enter the general election in 2015 no matter if the Constitution is changed or not.-VNA
