Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar authorities said on August 16 that they captured a fishing boat owned by a Thai citizen for violating Myanmar’s territorial sea in Kawthaung, the southernmost part in Tanintharyi Region.

According to the investigation, the boat carried seven fishermen and left Ranaung in Thailand last week for fishing and was captured on August 14.

The incident emerged amidst Thailand’s efforts to combat the illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in the country’s territorial waters to meeting the European Union (EU)’s requirements on origin and legitimacy of seafood exported to the EU market.

The action forced some Thai fishermen to hide on the western side of Hsin island, instead of returning to Thailand, and fished on Myanmar’s seas and then sell fish to markets in Thailand.-VNA
