Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi on August 17 began a five-day official visit to China.

This is the first visit by Suu Kyi to China since the Southeast Asian nation's new government, led by her National League for Democracy (NLD) party, took office on April 1.

The Myanmar State Counselor is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang, according to Chinese media.

They will exchange views on Myanmar’s peace process, the Chinese-invested Myitsone dam project which was suspended in 2011, as well as ways to enhance trade and investment ties between the two countries.

The Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Suu Kyi’s selection of China as the first nation outside the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to visit, is because the country shares more than 2,100 km of border with northern and northeastern Myanmar.-VNA
