Bangkok (NNT/VNA) – Thai Labour Minister Pol. Gen. Adul Sangsingkeo said the Myanmar authorities have agreed to send more workers to Thailand to work in the fishing industry through a government's Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) scheme to help with labour shortages.
Pol. Gen. Adul on August 16 revealed the outcome of a meeting with Myanmar's Minister of Labour, Immigration and Population U Thein Swe in Naypyidaw, saying that the Myanmar government is willing to allow more Myanmar nationals to come and work in Thailand's fisheries sector.
In the meeting, the Thai Minister thanked Myanmar authorities for the support of personnel and equipment for nationality verification operations to legalise the presence of 800,000 migrant workers from Myanmar in Thailand, which was completed on June 30, 2018.
The Myanmar authorities have also acknowledged Thailand's new allowance for migrant workers in the fishing industry according to Article 83 who are now able to work in Thailand for two more years beyond the previous expiry of their work permits on September 30, 2018. This allowance will benefit 11,000 migrant workers, 2,209 of whom are Myanmar nationals.
Thailand's fishing industry is now facing a shortage of some 42,000 workers, and is hoping for migrant workers from neighbouring countries to help fill these vacancies.
Thai authorities have stressed migrant workers will be employed on a clear work and compensation contract, with benefits and welfare ensured. The Ministry of Labour will be opening an employment commencement and termination centre in Ranong to process workers in fisheries, who arrive as part of the MoU scheme between the governments of the two countries.
Minister U Thein Swe said that Myanmar is willing to support Thailand in this matter, as both countries have enjoyed 70 years of diplomatic relations, and urged the Thai authorities to take good care of Myanmar workers, ensuring they receive legal protection.
He added that he will be visiting the employment commencement and termination centre in Ranong province himself for the opening ceremony.
The Labour Minister, stressed this discussion will further enhance cooperation on labour movements according to the MoU between the two countries, which will be beneficial for Myanmar workers in Thailand who are assured of receiving legal protection and not being victims of human trafficking or discrimination.-NNT/VNA
