Myanmar’s general election slated for November 8 will be held as planned despite a proposed delay due to recent flooding and landslides, the country’s Union Election Commission (UEC) said on October 13.

Earlier the same day, the UEC had a meeting with 10 political parties in Nay Pyi Taw to discuss a postponement of the parliamentary election.

Leader of the opposition National League for Democracy party Aung San Suu Kyi opposed a delay while three other parties, including the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party, advocated the idea.

However, the UEC is authorised to give the final decision of the issue whether political parties agree or not.

Flooding in Myanmar in recent months claimed more than 100 lives and seriously affected over 1 million others.-VNA
