The 24th ASEAN Summit will be held on May 10-11 in Myanmar for the first time since the country joined the bloc 17 years ago.

Myanmar Vice President Sai Mauk Kham said every effort is put in preparations for the summit in Nay Pyi Taw.

Myanmar is committed to undertaking ASEAN’s chairmanship role soundly this year – the last year for an ASEAN Community to take shape by 2015, he said.

The summit will be followed by an annual forum set for May 11- 12 for ASEAN leaders, entrepreneurs and experts to look at regional challenges and cooperation for 2015, and progress made by the region and the world.

Soon after taking up the ASEAN Chair in early 2014, Myanmar first hosted ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting Retreat in Bagan in January under the theme "Moving forward in unity to a peaceful and prosperous community."

In March, the ASEAN People's Forum themed "Advancing ASEAN Peoples' Solidarity towards Sustainable Peace, Development, Justice and Democratisation" took place in Yangon.

The event attracted nearly 3,000 civil society representatives across 10 ASEAN countries and Timor Leste.-VNA
