National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung’s visit to Geneva, Switzerland, to attend the 130 th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU-130) has illustrated the Vietnamese legislature’s positive contributions to the world’s largest parliamentary forum, according to a key official.
Chairman of the NA’s Committee for External Affairs Tran Van Hang made the remarks in a recent interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency. He added that Hung’s visit had aided preparations for IPU-132, which is slated to take place in March 2015 in Hanoi.
At the IPU session on March 17, Chairman Hung delivered a keynote address that conveyed to the world the message that Vietnam expects to work with countries all over the globe for a world of peace and democracy.
He also noted the role of the parliaments, the IPU and the Vietnamese NA in combating transnational crime, counter-terrorism and ensuring human rights across the world, stressing that cooperation between parliaments and the IPU will create impetus for human progress.
At working sessions with top IPU officials, Hung informed them of the IPU-132’s theme of parliaments and the implementation of sustainable development goals beyond 2015 which received their support.
IPU President Abdelwahad Radi said he is confident that the IPU-132 will be a success and the host Hanoi will take its place in the honourable history of the IPU.
On the fringes of the Geneva event, Hung also held other bilateral meetings and witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Vietnamese NA and the IPU on hosting the IPU-132. The Vietnamese delegation also took the occasion to unveil the IPU-132 logo.
Hang said that during his Swiss visit, Hung also held talks with President of the Swiss National Council (Lower House) Ruedi Lustenberger and President of the Swiss State Council (Upper House) Hannes Germann, during which both sides underscored the need to bolster external and cooperative ties between the two legislatures, thereby boosting bilateral connections in economics, trade and investment.
The Swiss side pledged to provide Vietnam with higher amounts of official development assistance during 2014-2015, and called for more investment in the country, expressing hope that Vietnam will serve as a springboard for Switzerland to expand partnerships in Southeast Asia.
During his subsequent visit to Italy from March 20-22, the top legislator met with senior government and parliament leaders, during which he received their support in furthering ties with Vietnam, particularly in economics.
Italian President Giorgio Napolitano confirmed that Vietnam and Italian parties have reached consensus on solidarity, friendship and cooperation for their mutual development. He said he is calling on home enterprises to expand connections with Vietnam in trade, investment, tourism and other fields holding potential.-VNA
