The National Assembly’s Law Committee convened its 9th plenary meeting in Hanoi on March 11 to give opinions on the draft amendments to the 1992 Constitution from its members.

NA Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu, who is also Vice President of the NA Committee on Drafting Amendments to the 1992 Constitution, said the Law Committee should pay attention to contents relating to democracy, people’s rights and the institutionalisation of the Communist Party platforms and Party Congress documents with a view to making the people the real decision makers on the nation’s important issues.

Participants agreed that the draft revised Constitution has inherited the scientific methods of previous Constitutions as well as the constitution-making experiences of other countries.

The draft revised Constitution has basically met the demands of the current situation as well as the country’s development orientations in both the short- and long-term, and dealt with issues and shortcomings arising during the implementation of the 1992 Constitution, they said.

Many said the content of the draft revised Constitution abides by international law, meeting integration requirements and reflecting Vietnam ’s point of view that respects human rights, and citizens’ basic rights and duties.

However, several ideas propose that the draft revised Constitution needs to be condensed while covering all the basic content of the Constitution.

On the same day, a delegation of the Party Central Committee’s Steering Commission led by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc inspected the collection of public opinions on the draft amendments to the 1992 Constitution in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

The Deputy PM requested that the province write a report that details the number of people involved in the poll, as well as the rate of approval and disapproval with the content.

The poll will go on until September 30, Phuc said, asking the province to acquire more suggestions from experts and managers.

By March 10, the province had organised nearly 2,600 conferences to gather opinion on the draft revised Constitution, with 144,000 people attending and 17,000 ideas collected.-VNA
